This seems too easy. You rip yourself from the grip of Jack and run down the street. Jack is startled for a second but turns around and set off after you but you are too quick. You are able to lose him in the heavy pedestrian traffic of the early evening rush-hour.
After walking for half an hour, periodically stopping and looking over your shoulder to check if Jack is on your trail, you relax a little.
With your cell phone, you call Emily again, telling her what happened.
“You idiot!” she exclaims. “Those were Kate’s friends. You are in danger, we think that you are being followed. Where are you so they can pick you up again?”
You use your cell phone’s GPS to share your location with Emily.
“Now wait there, they will be there soon,” she adds angrily. She hangs up the phone.
You feel a bit sheepish. “They appeared after you told Emily where you were so of course they must have been Kate’s friends,” you think to yourself. A few minutes later the same van pulls up, Jack and Mike in the front. This time Jack just wave you into the van. You work your way to the van through the pedestrians, one or two people bumping into you.
After a short drive, the van comes to a stop. The sliding door opens, revealing the building of the university lit up by bright lights. A sign points to the physics department.
“This way!” Mikes says and walks towards the building. As he approaches the door it opens. A young student looking anxiously around.
“We heard that you ran into some problems. Are you sure you were not followed?” he asks Mike.
“Note, everything is fine. Our friend here had all the excitement,”
The university student leads you deeper into the building into a computer lab. There is about a dozen other students in the lab. They all go quiet when you enter the room.
You reach into your jacket pocket for the memory stick. It’s not there! The only thing in your pocket is a small handwritten note. It reads: “We now have the data and you have your life. A fair exchange don’t you agree?”
The end.
